The Framing Guide: How to Give Your Art the Perfect Look
Got a new piece of art? Awesome! Now it's time to give it the stage it deserves. One of the most common questions we get is how and where to frame our pieces. The good news is that it's much easier (and more affordable) than you might think.
Whether you chose our Premium Matte Paper or our 100% Cotton Canvas, here are the best ways to turn your print into a stunning centerpiece in your home:
1. The Easy & Affordable Solution: Ready-Made Frames (DIY)
If you want your art on the wall by tomorrow without breaking the bank, this is the option for you. Most of the prints on our site are sized to fit standard frames found in major retail stores.
-
IKEA: The most popular and cost-effective option. Series like RIBBA or LOMVIKEN come with a "passepartout" (a white mat border) that gives your art a high-end gallery look for a fraction of the price.
-
H&M Home: They offer modern and minimalist frames that perfectly complement prints on matte paper.
-
Local Home Goods Stores: Great for finding basic frames in sizes like 30x40 or 50x70 at rock-bottom prices.
The Secret to a Gallery Look: How Does a Passepartout (Mat) Work?
A passepartout is the cardboard border (usually white or cream) included inside many ready-made frames. Its purpose is to give the artwork "breathing room," draw the eye in, and elevate the overall aesthetic.
Here is the simple rule to avoid confusion: If you want to use a passepartout, you need to buy a frame that is larger than the print you ordered. The inner "window" of the mat must be the exact size of your artwork.
Quick Size Guide (based on IKEA and standard retail sizes):
-
Ordered a 21x30 cm (A4) print? → Buy a 30x40 cm frame. (The inner window will perfectly fit your print).
-
Ordered a 30x40 cm print? → Buy a 40x50 cm frame.
-
Ordered a 40x50 cm print? → Buy a 50x70 cm frame.
-
Ordered a 50x70 cm print? → Buy a 61x91 cm frame.
Prefer not to have a white border? Easy! Just buy a frame that is the exact same size as your print (for example, a 50x70 cm print will fit perfectly into a 50x70 cm frame once you remove the passepartout).
2. Canvas Stretching – For a Clean, Artistic Vibe
If you ordered your piece on 100% Cotton Canvas, we highly recommend doing a "gallery stretch." This is the process of wrapping the canvas around a hidden wooden inner frame.
-
Why do it? It gives the artwork a clean, three-dimensional presence on the wall without the need for an external frame or glass.
-
Where to do it? At any professional framing or photo shop. Just bring them the rolled canvas you received from us, and they will handle the rest.
3. Custom Professional Framing
For those who want to go all out with custom wood choices, specific frame colors, or anti-reflective museum glass. While custom framing is an investment, it turns your print into a lifelong collector's piece.
Summary: Matte Paper or Canvas?
-
Matte Paper Prints: Best displayed in a frame behind glass (with or without a passepartout). The matte texture prevents unwanted glare and offers a classic gallery aesthetic.
-
100% Cotton Canvas: Our premium canvas looks incredibly striking when stretched over wood. No glass is needed—just enjoy the rich texture of the fabric.
